Sounds bad to me. Usually, you can see this kind of problem when:
1) the RAM is bad
2) Software / OS crash

If you checked the RAM with no luck, then over 95% (i see 99%) chance you've got
bad win98. The best way to solve it without losing data (but losing all apps) is
to Deltree c:\windows , then reload win98. If you have full backup on data, I
suggest do a fresh reload (format, reload all over again).
