I had this exact problem this past week.  I found that the cables to the
sub-D were defective.  They (com1 and com2 ) worked only 3 weeks ago, so
when I tried a new cable the mouse was found immedately on either port with
the new cable.  Put the old cables back and NOT.  Go figure??
