I certainly believe "something happened", but I have to agree with Ultra.
I have inadvertently (and on purpose) left many a hard drive data cable
hooked up to drives with no power cable installed and never had a problem
other that sometimes the BIOS complains or it searches a lot trying to
figure out what is wrong... This is before and after the GUI...
Windows may do a lot of searching, pausing,  and fumbling too...

While this "can" cause some VERY odd symptoms, I have never damaged
data on any drive I have ever handled this way...  Just my 2 cents...
