All the previous answers are correct regarding to adding files to a CDR;
however, you mentioned   "append"  data which in backup procedures typically
refers to replacing existing data with updated files.

Are you asking for a solution wherein you might have a bookkeeping or data
file named "mystuff.qbd" with a modified/created  date of yesterday and you
would like to update it from your hard drive's "mystuff.qbd" to your CD with
today's? Something of an overwrite, I presume?

If this is the case, you may do so only with CDRW (rewriteable) CD's and
software made to manage such.  Your CDRW drive typically (if not always)
will come with the necessary software.
