Do you have to tell the CMOS that you are using Mono as opposed to standard
VGA/EGA?  I know that there is a selection for Mono in many CMOS settings.

There aren't separate mono vga drivers.  I regularly move machines
between color and mono vga monitors as I service them.  None have
require or needed any other driver because the monitor was mono.
