Yes, and you'll be surprised to know how many resolutions are there
- let's list the modes as detected by my monitor:

1) The BIOS boot screen works in 80x25 text
2) The Windows 98 start-up ("Starting Windows 98...") is 80x25 text
as well, but different timing and refresh rate, so the monitor regards
it as a different mode
3) The Windows 98 "logo" startup screen (with the blue bar) is in
non-standard VGA mode (320x400x8-bit color) at 60Hz
4) The desktop opens in user-selected mode (1280x1024x32, in my case)

Windows 2000 operates similarly but the "logo" (Starting Windows
2000) is in 640x480x4-bit color@60 Hz.
