Here is a site for general info about burning.
The subject is very complex...
http://www.mrichter.com/cdr/welcome.htm
Click on the links on that page for:
    The Primer - updated 7 July 2002
HTML to read here, or in Acrobat format.
I'd give the direct links, but PDF ones generally
work poorly (for saving as a file) from an email message.

Another site is: http://www.cdrfaq.org/ It takes a
whole day to read that one properly.

Some burning programs used to give direct access to
reading the ATIP section of the CD.
Sony pitched a fit, so that was generally removed most
places. (I noticed it is no longer supported in my DVD
drive, but still works with my burner, so YMMV.)
There was a free program (cdrid) to read the ATIP.
It requires ASPI. (A sort of helper for the OS.)
ASPI was included in earlier versions of Windows and
upgraded by Roxio EZCD until (including) ver 4, then they
stopped using it. There is a new version of ASPI for Win-XP.

(cdrid) is no longer supported, and the last address I had
for it was: http://www.gum.de/cdrid/

Good luck. Rick Glazier
