To Jerry,

You may have a lemon. I've used a CD burner on a 486 - 33 in the past with
no problems.

Subject: Re: [PCBUILD] Which CD-R Drive is better?

Thanks for the comments Yui,
I have been using TDK "1x,2x,4x,6x" compatible disks and am only able to
create a usable disk using the 1x speed. I have tried Verbatim and Ricoh
supplied disks. The Ricoh worked at 2x, but is relatively expensive. The
drive was returned to Ricoh for service twice since I owned it, both times
under warranty. The first time was because the fan failed and needed to be
replaced. The second time was because the drive still was not producing
reliable CDs. Maybe I have a lemon. I do have 2GB of disk space for
copying/writing CDs, but the CPU is only 200MHz K6 overclocked to 233, with
160MB SDRAM DIMM.

On Behalf Of Yui Shin

Hi Jerry,
Have you tried different dics media, especially brands
that indicate a speed rating ? I have an internal IDE
Ricoh 4x/4x/20x which fills a 650MB Kodak CD-R in
18 min. flat to share with others, but I do not touch the
computer during the process and powersave disabled.
Anyway just my input because I know how miserable
it is to burn at 1x.

Hi Michael,
I personally think the HP's are better built than the
Ricoh's based on internal components, but my Ricoh
CD-RW has worked flawless. Like Jerry I've experienced
some speed issues with my older HP CD-R; which was
later corrected by using better media and freeing some hard
drive space.
