If the NIC weren't working, you wouldn't see the other network resources via
the other protocols.

How about a basic test. Can you ping anything from the WS? First try pinging
the localhost to verify the TCP/IP stack is functioning. Then, try pinging
the DHCP server.

I might try connecting the laptop to the WS with a cross-over cable to try
to get both of those computers to talk to each other. That would be another
way to verify the NIC.

You didn't mention the OS, but if it's WinNT 4 or above? What is the protcol
discovery order in bindings?
