I would recommend NetBEUI unless you specifically need IPX (Quake?,
Doom...?).  For small peer-to-peer installations this protocol is very easy
to set up and works well for simple file and printer sharing.  You can of
course use TCP/IP with the non-routable addresses but this is more
complicated.  If you already have TCP/IP on some machines for dial-up
Internet access then install NetBEUI and make sure to unbind it from the
dial-up adapter and make sure to unbind TCP/IP from the network card.
