Hi, someone out there is bound to disagree with me for some reason or other,
but, personally, I find that Norton speed disk is very good, and I tend to
use it rather than the windows defrag. It's always been very quick compared
to windows defragmenting, and, as time is often an issue with me, I do use
that along with the Norton disk doctor rather than scandisk.
(I very rarely use defrag and scandisk, and as of yet, have never run into
any problems)
All I can say is that so far it has worked for me.

Everyone has the same problem. Dean is right, but I would like to throw in a
little twist. Windows ME has the best and fastest defrag program around and
you can download it and run it from your desk top on any Windows I use it on
my Win 98SE and 2000. Get it from Microsoft home. Good luck Gary

When I had this same problem, what I did was to turn off any screen saver,
then hit ctrl>alt>delete, and start shutting down applications until the
only thing left on the list is "Explorer." Then the disk defragmenter would
work properly. This helped me after I added a slave HDD.
