A couple pertinent items were not mentioned, such as your operating system
and how much ram is in the system.

Actually, it sounds as if you have either a memory leak in Win95 or an
application... or your registry and system files are overloaded with entries
for hardware and/or software you probably are not using... or you have
loaded too many fonts... or you have something that is in one way or another
taking a huge bite out of your available ram.... such a huge desktop graphic.

One thing to try is to open your task manager and start closing programs,
press "ctl+alt+del" to bring it up. Then start closing any programs you
do not need to run the system, (do not close explorer). When you have
closed as many as possible, try an application and see if it is not faster.
