1. Get rid of Norton, you don't need it if you have AVG. Running more than
one antivirus program may cause problems. Norton all by itself has been
less than reliable.

2. Make sure that AVG and Spybot are fully up-to-date on signatures and once
again, if you haven't run a manual scan with both since discovering this
problem, DO THAT.

3. Go to Task Manager. What programs are continuously showing non-zero CPU
usage?

4. In Spybot, click Mode, choose Advanced Mode. Then click Tools, and then
System Startup. What things are listed there? Do you recognize all of
them?

Subject: [PCBUILD] round 2 , harddrive running constantly

It's not that, I Run Norton 2004, AVG, Spybot, Have ICF on , Have a hardware
Firewall (router ). Use automatic updates, Installed SP2 for XP the other
day without a hitch.

Virus, worm, spyware, trojan. Take your pick, you probably have one or
more
of 'em.

Start by making sure your AV software is running and up-to-date, and
scan
the entire system.
Make sure XP is up-to-date on security patches. (Windows Update,
critical
updates)
Make sure the XP Internet Connection Firewall is enabled.

If no help after all this come back for round 2.

Carl

Subject: [PCBUILD] harddrive running constantly

Hello solvers of problems large and small,
Not sure if this is software or hardware issue, but its affecting
hardware.
Have a Dell (sorry) 4600 , 40gb, 256mb ram,Windows XP home. Acouple of
months ago the harddrive started running whenever the computer is on.
even
setting my power options to go to standby after 10 minutes of idle
dosn't work.( sometimes, it has a mind of its own) I can put it on standby
manually and it works
