Since long time ago. Even steel slider can come off, and if it does, the
situation doesn't get any better than yours.

I think you have to open the drive up to find the missing plastic pieces.

Floppy drive is cheap, replace with a new one won't hurt much.

You don't have to bring the computer down, all you need to do is shut down
for 5min, get the floppy drive off, run the PC without floppy while you work
on it. Once it fixed, put it back (shut down for another 5min).
