I recently had to upgrade from a xp2000 to a Athlon 64 3200. The xp2000 and
xp2400 are Socket A which is old and hard to find. You will spend > $60 to
replace your processor because it's no longer manufactured. Even the 754
socket CPUs that I upgraded to are being phased out. I think your best bet
is to upgrade to a 939 socket cpu and motherboard. This way you'll still be
able to use your RAM and other components with the plus of twice the cpu
performance. You may also need a heatsink for the cpu. You should be able
to get all 3 parts for around $100. One thing to note if you choose to
upgrade is whether your powersupply has 20 or 24 pin main power support and
4 pin cpu power. Newer motherboards have 24 pin for main board power and a
4 pin cpu power lead. If yours doesn't have these leads, you'll need a new
powersupply as well.

If you choose to replace your cpu with another socket A cpu, ensure that
what you get works at the same memery bus speed. xp3000 and xp3200(I can't
say if they are backwardly compatible with 266MHz) work at 333Mhz wherease
your xp2400 is probably running at 266MHz.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Athlon xp a400+ upgrade

In order to run a software upgrade i need to run a CPU that supports CPU
extension SSE2.

I have an e-machines t2482 with an Athlon xp 2400+ processor (no SSE2
support)
Is there a processor I can economically upgrade to.

I will probably build my next box myself. So I'd like something cheap to get
by or something that fits that I can use in my next box.

Thanks if you can help
