While this may not be the original poster's problem, I have found that sometimes
mice aren't recognized if the user is moving it during bootup. This is because
the mouse is detected by "polling" the serial ports and looking for a certain
response. Moving the mouse will cause unrecognized characters to be sent when it
is being polled. I think sensitivity to it may be dependent on the brand of
mouse and the mouse driver.

I avoid touching the mouse while the system is booting.
