If a clock loses time while the system is running, it's a battery problem.

If it loses time while the system is on, it's a software problem.

The latter is fairly rare.

BTW - If you can change the battery while the PC is running, you shouldn't
lose any BIOS settings. But on or off, be careful of static - make sure you
ground yourself adequately.

From: "Dean Kiley" Subject: [PCBUILD] system clock

BlankI am working on a HP Pavilion 6640c with a AMD-K6 (tm) 3D processor,
184 MB RAM and 15 GB HDD. After upgrading from W98 to WME, the system clock
looses about 15 min a day. Could this be a dying battery?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Dean H. Kiley
