Can be just as simple as your floppy drive is bad or going bad. OR could
be complicated in other terms you probably do not want to hear.
So there are all sorts of devices especially USB devices, providing you
have USB ports, which depends on the system, CDROM/ readers and burners
that you can buy... I am not sure what you define as cheap, but the
prices are very reasonable now as compared to just some months ago. If
you get a external USB CDROM burner the good thing is that you will be
able to easily use it on your new system when you get that.

Hi everyone,
I have a Pentium II, running Windows 98. It has a CD player, and a 3.5"
floppy . More and more, the floppy drive is not recognized by the hard
drive. When I insert a disk nothing happens, and "My Computer" shows no
floppy drive. I have taken it apart and checked all the cables etc, and
everything looks fine to my untrained eye. Several reboots will
sometimes get the hard drive to recognize the floppy. I am certain that
one day soon it will be completely dead. I will be replacing my system
in approximately 6 months. In the meantime, is there an external CD
read/write or floppy disk that I can cheaply purchase and plug in, or
other cheap temporary bandage solution? I am a complete novice. Please
keep any advice you can afford me in simple terms.
