I've got a 486 system, with a Rockwell internal 56k modem, running windows 95.  AOL  7.0 was unbelievably slow.

I uninstalled AOL, then reinstalled it.  There was no improvement.

I went to the control panel, uninstalled the modem, rebooted, and reinstalled it.

At this point, AOL was unable to initialize the modem.  At the urging of AOL technical support, I deleted a file named GLOBAL.ORG, and allowed AOL to recreate it.  This did not solve the problem.

AOL tech support now tells me the problem is with the modem, not with their software.  However, the modem works fine with another ISP.  It just doesn't work with AOL.  Interestingly, AOL works great, if I access it through my other ISP, even though I'm going through that same modem.  AOL just can't access the modem directly.

The modem is a plug and play variety, which porports not to need a driver, but the recovery disk that came with the system contains a number of modem drivers.  I'm thinking about experimenting with them.  To select the proper driver, I might need to actually take the computer apart, to physically inspect the modem, and get the model number.  I'd prefer to avoid doing that if possible.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on here?  Am I at least on the right track?
