Actually, Linksys does say to have the router unplugged and the modem off at the start of installation.  You are supposed to plug your computers in, then turn on the router, and then, after completing all the router setup stuff you are supposed to turn the modem on.

Do not use IPX/SPX, which is an old Novell related protocol.  With the Linksys router you should only need TCP/IP.
