Sorry for the long delay in responding but I had a wee bit of trouble
getting onboard the list.

Here is an update on the steps I've taken on the advice of some of the list
members.

I deleted the swap file in DOS mode, defragged in safe mode and rebooted,
but the memory problem is still with me.

I had a look at the system monitor to see what the swapfile size and usage
was (as per Errol Nielson's recipe for creating a permanent swapfile) but
all seems OK there.

On startup the correct amount of memory is being reported.

As for the hard drive there is still 1 gig available as unused space so that
should not be the problem.

I think that my next avenue to follow up on would be to try a replacement of
the current memory module.
