If there was a storm in the area recently, then that is a strong indication the
modem has been fried.  I replaced two modems last summer
for friends who had that happen.  There are surge protectors that protect not
only the power, but the phone line from lightning strikes.
Anyone who lives in thunderstorm country should use them.  (Matter of fact,
there are surge protectors that can also protect your coaxial cable
for those who have cable modems.)
