I've been having trouble downloading files-programs, presumably due to a space recognition problem with one of my 2 drives. Oleg and Bill have been trying to help get it resolved. I decided to try using a different browser and see if the problem persisted. Netscape 4.6 was the new one, it came bundled with software from one of my ISP's. Never having used it, (IE5 was used, both stock and within AOL), it required a little setting up to run. I got it going and tried to download a small program from CNET. The download was successful, however, the destination folder wasn't there. I looked for a type of Download Manager in Netscape to redirect the target destination. In its preferences tree was a branch called "applications" with many file types and targets among which were several labeled download. Since the file type I was trying to get was an EXE file and not shown, I made a new category for EXE and labeled it "Save to Disk". I expected the save to disk box to come up when downloading EXE files. I didn't realize I was changing the entire system setup. The effect was to cause the entire operating system to look for "Save" to run executable files. I need to change the association for EXE files back to its normal setting. The screwup is only affecting my 40G drive and I am able to use my 4G drive with my basic programs on it. My 40 will boot and get to the Desktop but no other programs will run. The error dialog box saying it can't find "Save" to open EXE files comes up 21 times at startup, then stops. My desktop shortcut icons are present, but clicking on them brings up the error dialog again. "My Computer" will work to view contents. Explorer and File Manager won't run. Trying to edit the association in Netscape is blocked. How can a file association be changed without going thru Windows? Can it be done using "My Computer"? I went to the library and looked thru various DOS books, but I can't seem to get to true DOS on my system. It'll go to MS-DOS but only as far as C:\WINDOWS. I can't get a simple C:\ prompt. Instructions in the books to get to DOSSHELL don't work. Does anyone have a hint as to how to change file associations and/or attributes using "My Computer" or the Windows DOS prompt?. I tried running both drives with the operational 4 as master and the screwed up 40 as slave, but the system just hangs at the Windows 98 screen. Direct responses would be appreciated. Either [log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask] will get to me. Thanks Alan
