Before you reformat the HDD, which will erase all of your files and settings
on your daughter-in-law's laptop, you may want to check out Microsoft's

I would recommend a good, updated AV program, a firewall and all of the
critical updates required for her laptop. A free firewall (other than the one
provided by XP) is the basic version of ZoneAlarm...

I hope that this is helpful. My two cent recommendation is repair of the OS
rather than a replace.
