Instead of containing the CMOS/setup interface on a motherboard chip, many
Compaqs contain this setup interface on a non-DOS partition on the
hard-disk. It is this information that is normally accessed by pressing the
F10 key at startup. It sounds like your small 8MB proprietary Compaq
non-DOS partition containing the CMOS/setup interface has been deleted, or
the drive is new and has no such partition, or the hard drive is damaged and
has no such partition. You seem to have a hard-drive issue as your boot-up
is taking you to the floppy drive. You will probably have to go to Compaq
and download the Setup files for your model and then create a bootable
floppy containing the Compaq CMOS/setup interface. You can start your
search here:

press F10. The boot process continues & stops when at A:\ looking for a boot
disk. Should I clear CMOS?
