I think you are a bit confused.

There is no "common Western belief that one should drink a lot of water when
trying to lose weight".

There is a common Western belief that for good health, one should drink 8
glasses of water a day.   That is what the articles were talking about.

There is also a need, when in a ketogenic weight loss diet, to drink a lot of
water (as stated by Drs. Eades).

But, most people on a weight loss diet are not cutting carbs, nor in ketosis.
