Hello, I tried sending this message earlier, and it never showed up, so I apologize if it happens to appear twice. I am 29 weeks pregnant (due 4/5/03) and have read in several pregnancy books and online in various places (just do a search and you'll see) that a high protein diet during pregnancy may produce a small for term baby and, in some cases, a low birth weight baby. Most of the places I have read this do not mention where they get this from. I only saw one mention of a study done in a midwifery journal that was about high protein diets and low birth weight babies, but nothing specific about the study was mentioned.
Anyway, I have been measuring 1.5-2 cm less (fundal height) than I should for about 2 months now, despite a good weight gain and am concerned. My midwife does not think that it is an indication of a serious problem. She says that taller women like myself in subsequent pregnancies sometimes do not measure as much as the norm because of having a longer torso. She says that this baby may be smaller than my first, which is not a good thing to me, since she was 6 lbs 12 oz.
Anyway, I seem to be getting all of the right nutrients, etc. based on examining food and nutrient intake by keeping a food diary, except for the fact that my diet is high in protein and not so high in carbs. Perhaps during pregnancy paleo women are supposed to eat more carbs? My husband mentioned that Dr. Price found that people eating a traditional diet tend to be not as long and thin as folks on a modern diet. I remember reading this too, but I don't know that this would affect measurements during pregnancy.
If anyone has any ideas or experiences or anything in relation to high protein diets during pregnancy and size of baby, I would appreciate a reply.
I will try to locate some studies about this and will post any findings.
