Many things have changed since then.

There was just a program on TV with a doctor claiming that decades ago, people
used to sleep on average 8.5 hours a day, and now they sleep 6.5 hours a day,
and that this causes more consumption of carbohydrates (similar to what is
stated in the book "Lights Out").

Out of all the many changes in society over time, it is hard to point to one and
definitively say "it's that".
