The sugar in fruit does not have the same effect as sugar in sweets because
most fruits have a high percentage of fructose which has a much lower
glycemic index and thus less of an effect on blood sugar and insulin
response. The Eades, in Protein Power Life Plan, go into detail about the
effects of fructose versus glucose on blood sugar and how it affects
cardiovascular health. Another interesting book on the glycemic index is The
Glucose Revolution even though it promotes a SAD but foods with a lower
glycemic index. It also makes the point that how much of foods we eat also
raise blood sugar not just the types. Interesting that dates have one of the
highest glycemic indexes of any food. Higher than pure glucose.

I'm a little scared of fruit . I've had dates before and would buy a tray of
them and eat the lot!

Sugar in fruit must have the same effect on blood sugar as sweets, surely?
Maybe the fruit has more fibre in it so doesn't cause such a peak then drop
of blood sugar.

I'm going to try eating more fruit and I'll if that helps. I've just eaten
an organic pear after my lunch of organic lamb with organic sweet potato and
spinach. Very nice it was too....

Thanks for everyone's response.

Alison
