Trigger for conversion of carbs to fat is found

A protein discovered by scientists at the University of Texas
Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas senses high-carbohydrate diets.
The protein then activates genes needed to store carbohydrates as fat,
scientists report in the current issue of Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences.

While scientists knew that some genes sense carbohydrate levels, how
they did so was unclear. The new protein, discovered by Kosaku Uyeda
and colleagues, provides the link.

Future research will aim to design drugs that interfere
gene-triggering protein and ultimately slow fat production for people
eating lots of carbohydrates, says Dr. Uyeda.
