Sorry, but I can't buy any of the arguments that propose a
quasi-religious
or "it's the way we 'think' we should do it". That's just plain silly.


I agree with Wally on this.  I'd put my money on accidents, trial and error, etc. before I even go with instinct as a theory.  I'm sure most of us prep our own meals - many of you may not have cooked ever before.  The rest of us at least had a hard time suddenly cooking without out grain flour (white flour corn meal, etc.) dairy products and sugar.  I can't tell you how many times I've just gotten fed up with a recipe tasting terrible for the Nth time and thrown a ridiculous ingredient (or amount of ingredient) in there only to have the concoction turn out great.

Also, maybe they got the idea to cook food to make themselves warm from the inside - maybe it even started with heating WATER to drink to keep them warm.
