Can't speak to the Cordain book as I haven't read it, but...

White potatoes are in the nightshade family and are considered basically
inedible raw. I feel that yams and sweet potatoes are "paleo" though and I
do not hesitate to eat them. They are edible raw and cause me no problems of
any kind.
