And why would one do such a remarkably stupid thing? If eating carbs
initially caused the whole problem, how could anyone entertain the notion
that a return to eating high amounts of carbs would lead to any better
result?

While the maintenance portions of "ketogenic" plans don't necessarily
involve ketogenic levels of carb intake, they do call for continued
restrictions on carbs. Not because of any long-term effects of the
diet, but simply because success with such a plan indicates that the
person had problems which were addressed by carb restriction. "Going
back to eating carbs" would be as irrational as an alcoholic going back
to drinking after drying out...

Would you expect someone who cured or improved arthritic symptoms on a
paleo plan to go back to eating grain after the symptoms cleared up? Of
course you wouldn't... Lowcarb, ketogenic or not, and paleo address the
metabolic needs of many people. They aren't a one time cure, they are
permanent lifestyle changes. When you find the one that works for you,
you stick with it.
