100% correct. 95% of the population need more omega 3. Cf maybe 60% more
vitamin D, 40% more vitamin A, calcium etc etc. The only dietary way to get
them all is to go Paleo and get some exercise in the sun.

There is NO risk of BSE with grass fed meat- it only comes from
cannibalistic practises where cows are fed the remains of their dead
relatives. This is the same cycle as when New Guinea Highlanders developed
Kuru (similar to CJD) by eating the brains of tehir deceased relatives. Oh,
the things traditional peoples do to secure a supply of omega 3's never
cease to amaze me. When the reason was discovered in the 60's the practice
of eating the brains was stopped and Kuru is now virtually gone. Thus the
whole cycle of BSE was always predictable.

Jim I presume you have read the Omega Diet (Simopoulos &
Robinson)(essential) and perhaps Andrew Stoll's Omega Connection (more on
brain and diet). As Simopoulos shows omega 3 is essential for all forms of
heart disease. Basically NO exceptions.

Ben

>I have come to believe that lack of omega-3 is modern man's biggest
remaining hurdle once the forbidden foods have been eliminated.
(Corrections, argument, debate welcome...)

("Relatively healthy", is probably an unattainable goal to which I
aspire.)

> Do we need 50 grams a day?

I have no idea. My intention is simply to mimic as closely as possible
the diet of ancient hunter gatherers, including the eating of organ
meats.

> In my opinion an effort to eat paleo, watch the forbidden foods and
exercise will suffice.

Does not "eat paleo" include consuming organ meats, such as brains?
I have _severe_ heart disease, and I am not ever likely to have any
significant exercise tolerance.

> Is it worth the risk of getting who knows what from contamination?

Is it worth the risk of disease from lack of omega-3?

I'm not being a "smart arse", I don't know the answer to that question.
It is very difficult to know just where all the costs/benefits balance
out to. It also probably depends to some degree on the individual. My
situation is extraordinary, I may need to take extraordinary measures.

To put it into perspective...

I am 43 years old, with severe heart disease. It is my understanding
that the gestation period for BSE and scrapie is 25 to 30 years. Without
some dramatic changes in the progress of my heart disease I am VERY
unlikely to last 25/30 years. (Over a year ago, my cardiologist wrote to
another specialist that he was surprised I had lasted this long (8 yrs
at the time).) If gobbling omega-3s can make me last 25/30 years,
_perhaps_ the risk of destroying my brain after that period of time *IS*
worth it. (Rock and a hard place...)

I welcome discussion on any of these issues...

bye for now,
Jim
