I was browsing through Melvin Anchell's book _The Steak Lover's
Diet_ in Borders yesterday. Most of the arguments are very
familiar to readers of Neanderthin, with certain striking
exceptions. This diet is not specifically an attempt to mimic
paleolithic eating patterns; it is an empirical approach, based
on what Dr. Anchell has found to work or not work. It is nearly
an all-meat diet (and indeed can be all-meat if one wishes), but
includes some non-paleo non-meat foods, and excludes many paleo
ones. In some cases Dr. Anchell's only reason for including a
food is that "it works" and he doesn't know why. So, for
example, he allows small portions of potatoes and rice, because
he has found with his patients that they work. He allows some
berries, grapes, pears, and grapefruit, but excludes most other
fruits, and most vegetables.
