Breast-fed babies' stools do often contain lactose- this combined with the
lactobacilli (their normal bowel flora) gives the stool a yoghurty smell.
When children change from breast milk to cow-milk based formula, the faecal
flora changes over to E.coli, the adult bug (amongst others). Their stools
then become more adult (smelly) and they often suffer constipation as a
result.
