The lye is used when mking it soft again. I dont think there is anything
else than salt added to the dried fish, so it would be paleo eating it
that way. Nowadays it is always sold ready softened/wetted ("lutad")
and it is hard to find it in its dry state and then very expensive.
It is a custom on swedish christmas tables, but must youngsters dont eat it.
It is cheaper and better to buy some fresh cod, coalfish or ling.
