I think the point is that during the growing season, H-Gers would know
where the berries, roots, and fruits were, and when they ripened.  So these
foods could be more or less counted on.  Certainly meat/fat gained from
hunting
was a vitally important part of the diet, especially in winter,
but hunting is always a hit-or-miss proposition (so to speak :-).
If hunting was bad today, at least you had
the vegetable foods to fall back upon.
