I agree with you, it does seem a bit far-fetched, considering our
adventurous nature.  But, if you take into account that they weren't all
that bright, I can imagine that paleo man may have been more scared or
superstitious about going out into the night and preferred to stay inside
the cave instead (especially if they had no fire to help protect them from
predators).
