The author of the book *The Fungus Link* recommends a diet that initially
excludes all fruits except for berries, grapefruits, lemons, limes, and sour
apples.  The reason? Grapefruits, lemons and limes contain potent antifungal
compounds.  Sour apples are rich in mallic acid, which also has strong
antifungal properties.

Interestingly, this approach allows for the consumption of fresh pressed
(unpasteurized) carrot juice as well as raw carrots.  "A 1988 study in the
Journal of Microbiology implicated carrot as a good fungus fighter.
Although the pulp is very important in the carrot, juicing gives your blood
stream immediately available nutrition and gives your digestive juices a
break from digesting whole foods." (From Doug A. Kaufmann's book)

He recommends generous amounts of fibrous vegetables and a long list of
options are included.  He has a fairly exhaustive list of meats, fish, fowl,
eggs, and herbs and spices that are permissable and beneficial.   He
encourages the use of garlic, which has anti-microbial properties not
limited to the eradication of fugni.  He suggests fresh raw garlic (for
example, added to raw carrot juice) rather than garlic supplements, which
don't contain all of garlic's synergystic compounds. He mentions the value
of caprylic acid (a fatty acid derived from coconut butter/oil), and several
herbs, which have been historically been used by native people.

Wouldn't someone following a paleo diet have a system that is not hispitable
to fungi?  Not necessarily.  Someone who has followed a less strict paleo
diet.... and regularly consumed  peas, peanuts, corn, beans, potatoes,
grains and grain products, sugars, cheese, cow's milk, or a list of other
dairy products (provided in the book), or a lot of dried fruits, juices,
starchy fruits such as bananas, mangoes, papayas, etc., or someone who has a
history of regular or frequent use of antibiotics or other drugs which
suppress the immune system and/or kill beneficial microflora, might be
hosting/feeding unfriendly microbes and might have hosted such unfriendly
invaders for years.

The idea is not only to eat a high protein, vegetable-rich moderate to low
carb diet, to starve the fungi in your body, but also to use foods and herbs
that will help to elminate the fungi and the fungal toxins they release into
your body.  Some of the potential links between certain foods and cancer
that are presented in Kaufman's book fit with what some paleo diet experts
have expressed in writing.

Basically, this guy's approach to eating is very paleo, most folks on a
paleo diet would likely need to make some modifications in diet for a
minimum of a two week test to see if one's problem may be related to fungal
toxins, if one is not sure after reading the book and considering what
symptoms may be present that have not cleared up.
