Hi, I'm Michael and I am interested in the thread re: modern approximations
of paleo foods. I have spent a fair amount of bush time, and for two years
did not buy any meat or protein product, unless I was traveling or
something. My feeling is that it is hard to get enough real game meat
hunting anymore, unless you are somewhere with really long seasons, or so
remote that you can poach. Poaching is not recommended, it has been turned
into a major offense. It is amazing how much meat you go through when the
meat is lean, as game is, and when you aren't eating a whole lot else.

There is a fair amount of non - game food, like possum, prairie dog, etc..,
but they are small, and you'll be busy skinning and trying to make the thing
taste like something you are used to. A little hunger helps in this latter.

One thing I think might work out pretty well is rabbit, raised not shot.
Although commercially, they are fed grain just like every other meat animal,
they don't have to be. I'm not really sure what all you would need, but I
know they can do pretty well on mostly alfalfa pellets. I know this, because
my wife has raised and kept orphan cottontails for several years on this
plus some veggies, greens, etc. But get ready for some serious killing,
cause it takes a lot of these things to feed a family.

Another hope I have is insects. I need some help with knowledge, but these
guys look like a major answer to me.

A great food if you have it in your rivers, is eel. These are fat, and its
mostly N3 polyunsat, supposedly the good stuff. If only they sold eels and
herring in our fish markets, we'd all be in fat city paleo-wise!

I hope more will be posted on this, especially if anyone has figured out the
insect menu, or a good way to use stuff that other people ignore. I haven't
figured out good ways to cook really lean meat without using flour. You
know, pound venison steak with flour, and cook in a smoking skillet!

Well, I enjoy the list! And Jean Louis, and others, please keep up the
scientific postings, even if to some they seem a bit out of church.
