No use the fresh ones from the branches.
Let the water boil before You put in the needles, that preserves vit C.
There are also some sugars and minerals in pine needle tea.
Whole needles need 25 min boiling, if You cut them first, 15 min is enough.

Well You can chew them and probably get some vit C and minerals and a
very little energy. But I do not know if pines were present in african
savanna, and if so, there were not better choices.
