If William lives in the Sonoran region, he can visit photo galleries
which show the NA of this region before the 30s and the introduction of
surplus commodities with its lard and other fats. They were very lean.
But, the theory goes, they had developed genetically to be able to store
fat, so it was even harder for them to keep weight off. Around where I
work, in Mesa, they were farmers, but their land was confiscated and so
many of them live just about 5 blocks south of me on a reservation (one
of many here in AZ) which affords little arable land. Thank god for
casinos.
