Who says you need a doctor to perform surgery?  I have read
accounts of Australian aborigines performing amputations *on
themselves* when, for example, an animal bite became gangrenous.

And it must be true, because they said so.  Forgive my sarcasm
but I have personal knowledge of some horror stories of people
who went to Mexico for alternative cancer treatment, including
this very one.
