I could not eat agree with Kathleen more. Despite
what Dr. Atkins or anyone else says, forcing your body
into ketosis to lose weight is not healthy.

The bottom line for any diet is calories in versus
calories out. You need to burn more than you eat.
And the healthy and sustainable way to do that is by
combining exercise with a mild caloric deficit in your
diet. If you do this consistently, you can lose
between 1-2 pounds of body fat a week. Your goal
should be to lose *fat*, not weight, and if you are
losing more than 2 lbs a week then some of it is
coming from muscle. This makes for a poor long-term
strategy because the amount of calories you burn at
rest is largely determined by your lean muscle mass.

An excellent brief introduction to the principles of
healthy fat loss can be found here:

Hope that helps out,
Lurisia
