It is my understanding that first thing in the morning the temp should be
about 98, then rise to between 98.6 and 99 between noon and three p.m. I
know of no thyroid authority who expects a 98.6 upon arising. There is a
natural temp rise till mid afternoon, then a gradual fall in the evening.
Morning on awakening should be you lowest temp, but if morning temp is
regularly below 97.6 AND you have low thyroid symptoms (such as difficulty
losing fat, dry skin, low mood, fatigue, etc.), you probably need thyroid
support. Beware that menstruating women should use only temperatures taken
on the first five days of the cycle, because rise in progesterone levels at
ovulation will increase basal temperature.
