The nightshades are new world plants which include tomatoes, potatoes,
eggplant, and tobacco. See:

which are the nightshades.  I'm not sure if they are paleo (they certainly were
not availiable to european paleo), but allergies and reactions to them are
quite common.

butter, however, is certainly not paleo.  Mashed cauliflower should be fine...
sweet potatoes, I really don't know.  I doubt they are edible raw...  I eat a
yam once in a long, long while.
