Down here in Miami, the fruit is sometimes called sapotilla. In Cuba it is
called zapote in the west of the island and níspero in the east. There are
lots of trees down here and I have actually never bought the fruit. I just
pick it from my neighbors´ lawns. The fruit is extremely sweet when ripe,
and there should be more flesh than pits. The pits are oval and shiny
black. If it is not completely ripe, it will make your mouth pucker. I
have eaten black zapote but never seen white sapote. The trees grow very
tall and you have to climb and pick the fruits green or they will explode
when they hit the ground if allowed to ripen on the tree.
