There are, as I understand it, health benefits to fasting, which include
increased production of growth hormones and strenthening of the immune
system.  I think this is because whenever you fast, your body reacts as if
you are sick or in trouble and tries to help itself.   (I can't remember
where I read this, so I can't provide a source. It may have been in Durk
Pearson and Sandy Shaw's Life Extension book).

Mae West said that one day a week she ate nothing and drank only water
flavored with a bit of lemon juice.  She lived to be 90-something.
