Yes, "can" be.  Just saw something on tv last week re. bones that were left
out in the African grasslands and very carefully watched.  Over time the
bones developed what looked like "cut marks" .  Wish I had paid more
attention to the program.  Anyway, the conclusion by the scientist who was
interviewed was that the theory of African cut marks was very much open to
discussion.
